The Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC) is seeking to strengthen its leadership team – known as its Centre Executive Committee (CEC) - and is therefore seeking Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from experienced leaders in Wales with a track record of substantial achievement in cancer research to fulfil the role of ‘Multi-Disciplinary Research Group (MDRG) Lead’ within the CEC for the remainder of the 2020-25 quinquennium as outlined in the attached call.
WCRCs research strategy 2020-25 focusses its research activities on the ‘cancer journey’ of cancer patients and healthy individuals who are at risk from cancer. Within WCRC there are four Work Streams, grouped into two Domains, as in the schematic below:
Context and lines of reporting
Translational research of the highest quality is crucially dependent upon collaborative partnerships between clinicians and scientists. WCRC’s innovative Multi-Disciplinary Research Groups (MDRGs) aim to extend the principle of multi-professional interactions in clinical Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs), whereby state-of-the-art therapies are recommended for individual patients. In the MDRGs, laboratory researchers and clinicians specialising in both interventional and qualitative clinical studies come together to devise novel, evidence-based research solutions to the unmet clinical needs of cancer patients.
The MDRG Lead will work across both the Centre’s Domains and will report to the Senior Leadership Group, via the Lead for Impact and Knowledge Transfer.
Specific Role responsibilities
- Oversee the on-going development of the current All-Wales MDRGs
- Monitor and report to the CEC on the performance of existing MDRGs
- Advise the CEC on potential new MDRGs
- Identify collaborative opportunities/outputs from the MDRGs and ensure that these are shared across the cancer research community
- Optimise communications and sharing of best practice across MDRG groups
- Make recommendations to the CEC on support required by the MDRGs, individually and collectively
- Work with the Biobanking Lead to ensure co-operation between WCRC and WCB in ensuring maximum availability of clinical samples for translational cancer research
- Work with the WCRC Coordinating team to promote and support the activities of MDRGs and communication of their achievements
- Experience as a member of or chair of an existing MDRG.

Responsibilities common to all CEC roles
- Attend Centre Executive Committee meetings regularly
- Ensure clinically-relevant, patient-focused cancer research activity
- Maximise interactions, collaborations and partnerships, across the cancer research community, inside and outside Wales, both within and beyond personal research interests
- Ensure that patient/public interests and views are represented in all aspects of WCRC’s work
- Advise on and shape WCRC organisational strategy, decision-making and performance, thereby enhancing WCRC’s research capacity, capability, reputation and sustainability
- Provide progress reports to the Director, Domain Leads, or Senior Leadership Group (SLG), as appropriate
- Contribute to WCRC’s interactions with Health and Care Research Wales (HCRW), where appropriate
- Actively promote maximum leverage of additional research funding from other public funding bodies, commercial and third sector partners, wherever appropriate
- Act as an ambassador for WCRC, championing its objectives and promoting its activities, wherever possible
